Stopover on the way to the Isla Holbox Ferry

Kanitunikin is a larger town than I expected out in the middle of the jungle, especially after seeing nothing but jungle for the last hour and a half. We were ready for that first Mexican cerveza bien fria. We drove into the outskirts with no open bar/restaurant sightings. We passed through what appeared to be the “Centro” of town with no sightings. Then we were apparently past the whole town and were focused on heading on to Chiquila, the ferry port for Isla Holbox. I noticed a tent off to the left with people around it. Turning around to investigate, we found a neat place to stop.

It was a restaurant built around a swimming pool and appeared to be the main attraction for the local residents. Many were seated at tables enjoying a beer or food while watching their small children in the kiddie pool. There were a number of children about middle school or high school age in their school uniforms apparently on break from school.

The uniformed kids all left at about the same time either to return to school or because they travel in herds, I’m not sure which.
